As the second week of extraordinary economic and social restrictions draws to an end, we are all adapting to the changes this means for business.

And it’s a very mixed picture.  For some it has meant closing the doors and waiting for the worst to pass, and for others it has meant making significant changes to an establish business model to keep trading. No business has been unaffected by the unprecedented scale and speed of change, and it is taxing our entrepreneurial and management skills to navigate a successful path.

The pandemic will end, and we need to be thinking ahead, planning for the time when restrictions will be lifted and we can return to what will undoubtedly be a new normal.

People will still need the things that retailers sell, but the way they buy them will continue to evolve. For example, the changes being forced upon some in the form of click and collect and home delivery may persist in markets where up until now it has not really been a feature. Garden centres and breweries are delivering to their local customers, and maybe that will continue to grow for them and others.
